Health Promotion

Committee Goals:

Develop strategies and content for dissemination of educational messages through multiple media channels, which include:

  • Type 2 diabetes risk factors and protective factors
  • Importance of screenings
  • Examples of community members and leaders who are engaging in behaviors that reduce their risk for type 2 diabetes
  • Changes that can be made in a person’s environment to reduce their risk for type 2 diabetes.
  • Promotion of existing diabetes education programs and lifestyle changes interventions that reduce the risk for type 2 diabetes.

Current Project 2011- 2021:

Develop and implement a “Choose Well” campaign through a series of awareness initiatives that encourage people to take small steps to improve their health habits.

  • Eat Well – Tips and tricks for developing healthier eating patterns, healthy recipes and local restaurant menu features.
  • Move Well – Walking groups, outdoor recreation
  • Work Well – Strategies for increasing activity and improving nutrition in the workplace and at school, including tips for packing healthier lunches and improving sleep habits.
  • Screen Well – “Know your numbers” – Encouragement and incentives to get screened for prediabetes with annual wellness exams.
  • Connect Well – Support for getting connected to services for lifestyle change and addressing social determinants of health such as housing, food security and safe relationships, among others.

Health Screenings

Committee Goals:

Increase diabetes risk screenings and referral to appropriate resources.

Current Project 2011- 2021:

Develop and implement a universal screening tool and closed-loop referral pathways between clinical care and community-based programs and services. This committee is supported, in part, by an Oregon Health Authority Sustainable Relationships for Community Health (SRCH) grant.

Access to Healthy Food

Committee goals:

Work with organizations that provide/sell food (grocers, retailers, farmers markets, schools, caregivers, and related organizations) to improve access to foods that are part of a healthy eating pattern

 

Current Project 2011-2021:

The mission of the Access to Healthy Food Committee is to make it easier for everyone in Tillamook County to eat healthy food. Most recently, the committee has partnered with Familias en Acción to host educational and recruitment sessions for Abuela, Mama, y Yo (Grandmother, Mom, and Me), a statewide, Spanish-language nutritional program for Latinos that provides science-based education on healthy practices for the whole family. If and when it is safe to do so, the committee will continue to support Familias en Acción in offering training sessions for community leaders interested in teaching Abuela, Mama, y Yo programs here in Tillamook County.

Access to Physical Activity

Committee goals:

Work with organizations to improve access to places to be physically active by increasing availability of walkable areas, bike lanes, trails, etc.

 

Current Projects 2011-2021:

  1. Implement Trails Day events for high school youth that promote outdoor recreation, trail building and maintenance skill building, stewardship and wildlife ecology education.
  2. ArcGIS mapping of all trails and outdoor recreation amenities in Tillamook County.
  3. Support for on-going Wellness Walking Groups in North, Central and South County.

Workplace Wellness

Committee goals:

Work with organizations to develop and implement programs and policies in the workplace that reduce the risk factors for type 2 diabetes.

 

Current Project 2011-2021:

Design and implement a health improvement series for employees that can be implemented by businesses of every size. The series will represent a holistic approach to wellness, and cover topics including healthy eating patterns, physical wellness, financial wellness, and self-defense. The series will also include specific health tips into a workday such as packing lunches and how to be physically active, special guests such as chefs to lead cooking classes, and prizes for participating.
